Lesson Summary & Reflection
Lesson Summary
This lesson on The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle focused on character development and themes using the 5E model. Students participated in discussions, researched the historical setting, and created multimedia projects with tools like Padlet and Canva to express their understanding.
What Worked
The engagement activities sparked excitement and curiosity, and group discussions helped deepen understanding. Most students embraced the digital tools and enjoyed the creative freedom of the multimedia project. It was rewarding to see them connect with the story on a personal level while meeting the lesson objectives.
What Didn’t Work
Some students found Canva challenging, which slowed their progress. A few groups struggled to stay focused, and the time allocated for project completion felt a bit tight for some.
What I Would Change
Next time, I’ll include a short tutorial on Canva to boost confidence and efficiency. I’d also implement more structured roles during group work and allow extra time for the elaboration phase to ensure students feel less rushed.
Student Responses
Students were enthusiastic about the creative aspects of the lesson, especially the project phase. They said the research helped them better understand the novel’s context and characters. A few shared that they needed more time to refine their work, which I’ll address moving forward.
Were Objectives Met?
Yes, students achieved the goals of analyzing themes, understanding character development, and using technology to communicate their learning. With small adjustments, this lesson can be even more impactful.
